What is LanguageCert Academic Speaking Part 3: Read Aloud?

Part 3 of the LanguageCert Academic Speaking section tests your ability to read a short academic text aloud clearly and then answer questions about its content. This task evaluates both your pronunciation skills and reading comprehension.

The task has two components:

  1. Reading aloud - Reading the text clearly with good pronunciation
  2. Discussion - Answering the examiner’s questions about the text

Task Format

AspectDetails
Duration~4 minutes total
Preparation Time30 seconds
Text LengthShort academic passage (80-120 words)
Text TopicsAcademic subjects (science, history, society, etc.)
Follow-upQuestions about the text content

Two-Stage Approach

Stage 1: Reading Aloud

What you’re assessed on:

  • Clear pronunciation of individual sounds
  • Word stress (emphasis on the right syllables)
  • Sentence stress (emphasis on key words)
  • Intonation (rising/falling patterns)
  • Pacing and fluency
  • Use of punctuation for natural pauses

Stage 2: Comprehension Questions

What you’re assessed on:

  • Understanding of the main idea
  • Recall of specific details
  • Ability to explain or paraphrase
  • Expressing your opinion on the topic

Key Strategies for Reading Aloud

1. Use Your 30-Second Preparation Wisely

During preparation:

  • Scan the whole text to understand the topic
  • Identify difficult words and work out pronunciation
  • Note punctuation for natural pausing
  • Find key information (you’ll need it for questions)

2. Pronounce Words Clearly

Focus on:

  • Word stress: UNiversity, deCIsion, econOMic
  • Sounds that are difficult for you: th, v/w, r/l
  • Word endings: -ed, -s, -tion

Example: “The environmental impact of plastic waste has become a significant concern for governments worldwide.”

3. Use Punctuation as Your Guide

PunctuationAction
Comma (,)Brief pause
Full stop (.)Longer pause, voice falls
Question mark (?)Voice rises
Colon (:)Brief pause, then list/explanation
Dash (—)Pause for emphasis

4. Group Words into Meaningful Chunks

Don’t read word by word. Group words into phrases:

Word by word (poor): “The / government / has / announced / new / policies / to / reduce / emissions.”

Chunked (better): “The government / has announced / new policies / to reduce emissions.”

5. Maintain a Steady Pace

  • Don’t rush through the text
  • Don’t read unnaturally slowly
  • If you stumble, recover quickly and continue
  • Keep going even if you make a mistake

Strategies for Follow-up Questions

1. Listen Carefully to the Question

The examiner may ask about:

  • The main idea of the passage
  • Specific details mentioned
  • Your opinion on the topic
  • Connections to your own experience

2. Refer Back to the Text

You can look at the text while answering:

“According to the passage, the main reason for the policy change was…” “The text mentions three factors, including…”

3. Expand Your Answers

Don’t just repeat the text—add your thoughts:

“The passage discusses climate change policies. I think this is particularly important because…”

Sample Text and Questions

Sample Text:

“Universities around the world are increasingly offering online courses alongside traditional classroom teaching. This shift has accelerated due to technological advances and changing student expectations. While online learning offers flexibility and accessibility, some educators argue that it cannot fully replace the interactive experience of face-to-face instruction. The challenge for institutions is finding the right balance between digital and in-person education.”

Possible Follow-up Questions:

  1. “What are the two types of teaching mentioned in the text?”
  2. “Why has online learning become more popular?”
  3. “What concern do some educators have about online learning?”
  4. “What do you think is the best balance between online and classroom learning?”

Sample Answer for Question 4:

“I believe a combination of both methods works best. For theoretical content, online videos can be very efficient since students can replay difficult sections. However, practical skills and discussions benefit from face-to-face interaction. In my experience, having weekly online modules with one or two in-person sessions creates good engagement without overwhelming students.”

Scoring Criteria

For Reading:

  • Pronunciation - Clear sounds and word stress
  • Fluency - Smooth delivery without excessive hesitation
  • Intonation - Natural rise and fall of voice
  • Pacing - Appropriate speed with meaningful pauses

For Discussion:

  • Comprehension - Understanding of the text
  • Relevance - Answering what was asked
  • Development - Expanding on responses
  • Interaction - Natural conversation with examiner

Practice Tips

  1. Read academic articles aloud daily (news, journals, textbooks)
  2. Record yourself and listen for pronunciation issues
  3. Practice with a timer - 30 seconds prep is shorter than you think
  4. Build vocabulary for common academic topics
  5. Summarise texts after reading to improve comprehension
  6. Shadow native speakers - listen and repeat simultaneously

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Reading too fast to “get through it”
❌ Ignoring punctuation
❌ Not using the preparation time effectively
❌ Stopping completely when you make a mistake
❌ Giving one-word answers to follow-up questions
❌ Not understanding the text before reading
